I studied it deeply—especially the work of Dr.Carol Dweck and her research on fixed and growth mindset:

A fixed mindset says, “This is who I am. I cannot change.”
A growth mindset says, “This is who I am becoming.”

That distinction matters. But over time, something didn’t hold.

I was working with thoughtful, capable people—people who understood mindset and wanted to grow. And yet I kept seeing the same pattern: They could understand it. They could apply it. But something inside them wasn’t changing in a lasting way. Something deeper remained untouched.

I began to realize that mindset explains how we approach change—but not fully why we remain the same. Growth is not only about how we think. It’s also about what we carry. And if those deeper places remain untouched, change doesn’t last.

That realization shifted everything. I became less interested in helping people think differently, and more interested in how a person becomes different—deep within. What I was encountering wasn’t just a framework. It was a place.

A quiet steadiness where thought and heart come into alignment—where something settles into clarity. Eventually, that place found its name: The StillPoint Project. It wasn’t a rebrand. It was recognition.

What I’ve described so far is the outward shift in my work. But the truest change didn’t happen in language or structure. It happened within me. Over a six-month season, I experienced something difficult to explain—but unmistakable once encountered.

It was that same interior place I had been trying to describe. A stillness. A clarity. A settling. And in that place, something else surfaced.

Years earlier, a colleague had said to me: “To truly know God, we cannot lose the mystery of God.” At the time, I understood that statement. Now, I felt it. Because if transformation reaches into the deepest parts of a person, it cannot remain purely psychological. At some point, it must encounter something greater. It must encounter God.

But how?

God cannot be reduced to explanation.
And yet the Bible is filled with moments where He is present—speaking, observing, acting within real human lives. A thought began to form.

What if those moments were not only meant to be studied…but entered? What if I listened as though the One who was there was not explaining what happened—but sharing His presence within it? What He saw. What moved in His heart. What He understood about the people before Him. Not commentary about the story. But the mystery of God within it. So I began. I went to Genesis. I listened. And I wrote.

What started as a simple act of listening became something more. A threshold. A place where the mystery of God begins to speak within the moments of the Bible. That threshold became:

At the Threshold Where Mystery Speaks.

—Robert

If you want to explore God’s Encounters: Start Here
If you want to browse the complete Archive of my Substack Articles: Start Here
If you want to know more about The StillPoint Project: Start Here

© 2026 Robert Ott.
